Why am I still having BMs out of my bottom with an ostomy?

It’s common for new ostomy patients to have bowel movements (BMs) out of the rectum, even after surgery. This can happen for a few reasons:

  1. Mucus Discharge: The intestines produce mucus to help things move through. If part of your colon or rectum is still in place, it may continue to produce mucus. This mucus can build up and be released, which may feel like a bowel movement.
  2. Leftover Stool: There might be some leftover stool in the lower part of your colon or rectum that was not removed during the surgery. It can take a few days or even weeks for this to pass.
  3. Loop ostomy: If your ostomy was created as a loop, there can be a small volume passage of stool into the bowel beyond your ostomy.

If you’re concerned or experiencing discomfort, it’s a good idea to talk to your healthcare provider. They can give you specific advice based on your situation and make sure everything is healing properly.
